Adding your own router, switch or mesh system, and the constraints that come with it.

Overview

You can put your own equipment on a Starlink connection. Starlink does not guarantee performance or compatibility with hardware it did not make, and some app features stop behaving as expected once a third-party router is in charge.

Third-party router

Connect the third-party router behind the Starlink router, then enable bypass mode in the app. That disables the Starlink router’s WiFi and hands everything over.

Two things to plan for before you start:

  • Exiting bypass mode requires a factory reset. There is no toggle back.
  • On a Starlink Mini, using a standard RJ45 cable costs you the IP67 rating. Use the Mini Starlink Cable if the connection is exposed.

Network switch

You can connect a switch. Where it goes depends on the kit.

Standard 4, Standard 4 X. Use one of the two LAN ports on the back of the Router 3, under the rubber cover, or a LAN port on your own router.

Do not put a switch between the power supply and the router, and do not connect a switch to the white port on the power supply.

Do not enable bypass mode for a switch. Bypass mode exists for third-party routers and hands out only one IP address, which is not what a switch needs.

Mesh

Starlink mesh nodes are sold in the Starlink shop, and a Router 3 or Router Mini can act as a node. See Routers and Mesh troubleshooting.

For a third-party mesh system, treat it as a third-party router: put it behind the Starlink router and enable bypass mode.

Client devices

Most devices connect without trouble. Keep firmware, operating systems and browsers current, and check with the manufacturer if something specific refuses to work.
