Every alert the Starlink app can raise, what it means, and what to do about it.
Overview
An alert fires if its condition happens at least once in a 15-second window, and stays up while the condition holds. Not every active alert affects your service; some are purely advisory. Alerts related to motorised dishes are omitted here, since the Standard 4, Standard 4 X and Mini have no motor.
Service and account
ACTIVATE STARLINK NOW
Your Starlink is online in its “free data” grace period, and its service will be cut off if the terminal is not activated within the designated timeframe.
What to do. Up to 60 minutes of free data. Activate your Starlink now to continue service.
NO ACTIVE SUBSCRIPTION
Your Starlink is not associated with an active account.
What to do. Activate or resume the service on your account.
DISABLED NO ACTIVE SERVICE LINE
The Starlink device does not have an active service line, resulting in disabled service.
What to do. Verify the account status and ensure that the service plan is active. If necessary, contact Starlink Support for further assistance.
DISABLED ACCOUNT DISABLED
Your account is disabled, possibly due to an inactive subscription or account issues.
What to do. Verify the account status and ensure the subscription is active. Contact Starlink Support for further assistance if needed.
SERVICE OUTAGE
Starlink services or starlink.com is experiencing an outage.
What to do. Nothing. Starlink is working on it.
DISABLED CELL IS DISABLED
The Starlink device is in a cell that does not receive service due to network management decisions or technical limitations.
What to do. Relocate the device to an area with active Starlink coverage.
Data limits
DATA USAGE LIMIT REACHED
Service is disabled because the plan’s data limit has been reached.
What to do. Tap the alert to configure Starlink WiFi and restore internet access.
OPTED INTO PRIORITY DATA
You have opted in to receive overage data for your Starlink.
What to do. Tap the alert to view and manage data usage.
DISABLED DATA USAGE EXCEEDED QUOTA
You have exceeded your data quota, resulting in restricted service.
What to do. Opt into additional data if the plan supports it.
DATA OVERAGE RATE LIMITED
The Starlink is rate limited as it is out of priority data.
What to do. Add more data by topping up or enabling automatic top-up.
Location and movement
DETERMINING LOCATION
Your Starlink is looking for GPS signal. This may take up to 15 minutes.
What to do. Do not unplug the dish while this is showing. Please note, third-party metal mounts that wrap around the terminal’s base enclosure, or placing the terminal directly on metal, may impact GPS performance and are not supported. For additional guidance on different mounting options, click the Starlink Help Center.
UNEXPECTED LOCATION
Your Starlink is not in the correct expected location. - Your Starlink is not in its registered country - Your Starlink is not in its registered location - Service is not available in this country - Service is not available in the ocean
What to do. Ensure your Starlink is in its correct location related to its service address & service plan. - Move your Starlink back to its registered country or change your service plan (to an appropriate one) to reconnect your Starlink - Update your service address or change your service plan to use Starlink away from its registered location. - Move your Starlink back to its registered country to continue service - Move your Starlink on land or purchase a Starlink Maritime product to connect
ROAMING PERIOD EXPIRED
Your Starlink has been outside of it’s registered country for too long.
What to do. Return to your registered country address on your account or update your registered address to your new location to resume service.
STARLINK MOVING TOO FAST
Starlink has detected it is moving too fast for your plan.
What to do. To resume service, reduce your speed below the limit for your plan. For Residential plans, return to your registered service address. Learn more about in-motion use the Starlink Help Center. Starlink plans support in-motion use up to these maximum speeds:
- Residential: Stationary use only at fixed, registered addresses
- Roam: Up to 100 mph (160 km/h)
- Local and Global Priority: Up to 100 mph (160 km/h)
- General Aviation Local 50GB: Up to 300 mph (480 km/h)
- General Aviation Global 50GB: Up to 450 mph (720 km/h)
STARLINK DISABLED WHILE MOVING
Your Starlink is moving too fast in accordance to its stationary policy. Your service plan only allows service while Starlink is stationary.
What to do. In-motion use is only supported for users with Starlink Roam/Mobile services.
DISABLED MOVING TOO FAST
The Starlink device is moving faster than the configured policy allows, and service has been disabled.
What to do. Update the service plan to one which supports higher speeds.
DISABLED ROAM RESTRICTED
The Starlink device is being georestricted after roaming for too long in a country that is not the roaming terminal’s home country.
What to do. Move the Starlink device to its home country and ensure it is powered on and active for at least 24 hours to resume service.
DISABLED TOO FAR FROM SERVICE ADDRESS
We received an alert from your Starlink showing it’s currently operating too far from its registered service address. Since Residential service is designed for use at your registered service address, your service has been restricted.
What to do. - Return to your registered service address. Service should resume automatically.
- Update your service address if you’ve permanently moved.
- Switch to a Roam plan if you plan to use Starlink away from home.
DISABLED UNKNOWN LOCATION
The Starlink system cannot determine the user’s location accurately, possibly due to GPS issues or incorrect service address settings.
What to do. Ensure the service address is correctly set in the Starlink account and verify that the device is in a supported service area. Escalate if needed.
DISABLED BLOCKED COUNTRY
The Starlink device is operating in a country where Starlink service is currently restricted or unavailable, triggering a dissablement.
What to do. Returning your Starlink to your registered service address or an available country will automatically resume your service and prevent further interruptions.
DISABLED NO SERVICE IN OCEAN
The Starlink device is in an ocean area. Starlink service plans work differently depending on where you are using your kit:
What to do. - Enable Ocean Mode: If you’re on Roam Unlimited, you can enable Ocean Mode. If you’re on Roam 50GB or Roam 100GB, first upgrade to Roam Unlimited, then enable Ocean Mode.
- Return to land or within coastal waters: Move your Starlink back to a land-based location or within 12 nautical miles of shore. Service should resume automatically once you’re back within supported coverage.
Software
UPDATE REQUIRED
Your Starlink’s software is out of date.
What to do. Your Starlink will download the latest software within the next 24 hours. If the download finishes before 3am, your Starlink will reboot automatically to apply this update. You can also update immediately from the app when the download completes. To ensure your Starlink can download the latest software, please keep it powered with a clear view of the sky.
MANUAL UPDATE REQUIRED
Your Starlink requires a manual update in order to get back online.
What to do. Run a manual software update. See Software updates.
SOFTWARE OUTDATED
Your Starlink’s software is very old and cannot connect to satellites.
What to do. Contact Starlink support about replacement options.
UNSUPPORTED SOFTWARE VERSION
Your Starlink needs an update to restore connectivity.
What to do. Make sure your Starlink has a clear view of the sky to receive the over-the-air update. Your Starlink will download the latest software and reboot to install.
DISABLED UNSUPPORTED VERSION
The Starlink device’s software version is no longer supported by the network.
What to do. Ensure the device is updated to the latest software version.
SOFTWARE UPDATE REBOOT PENDING
The Starlink device has downloaded a software update and is scheduled to reboot at 3 AM local time +/- 30 minutes to apply the update.
What to do. If you prefer the update to occur at a different time, you can manually reboot the device via the dashboard or app to apply the update at your convenience.
Signal and obstructions
STARLINK OBSTRUCTED
Your Starlink is partially obstructed. This can cause outages that will be most noticeable during video calls and online gaming.
What to do. For best performance, make sure your Starlink has a completely clear view of the sky.
HIGH TIME OBSTRUCTION
The Starlink device is experiencing significant obstructions, leading to frequent service interruptions.
What to do. Use the “Check for Obstructions” tool in the Starlink app to identify and address obstructions. Consider relocating the Starlink to a location with a clearer view of the sky or removing any physical obstructions.
RECENT INTERRUPTIONS
Starlink is online and performance has been healthy over the last minute. However, it looks like your Starlink has experienced elevated packet loss in the last 15 minutes.
What to do. No immediate action needed. This issue may be due to extreme weather, a temporary network issue, or obstructions.
UNABLE TO ALIGN
The Starlink device is installed in a location where it cannot align the antenna to the desired angle, potentially causing poor performance or connectivity issues.
What to do. For actuated Starlink devices, inspect the installation to ensure the motor functions correctly by stowing and unstowing the Starlink from the Starlink app. For flat mount (un-actuated) models, ensure the Starlink is securely attached to a horizontal surface.
POP CHANGE
The Starlink point of presence (PoP) has changed, resulting in a new IP address assignment for the region.
What to do. You may need to reboot your Starlink or third-party equipment to get back online. If the alert persists and performance is affected for more than 30 minutes, further assistance may be required.
Cables, power and hardware
POOR CABLE CONNECTION
Negotiated Ethernet speed between Starlink dish and Router indicates poor cable connection. Potential cable damage.
What to do. Try unplugging and plugging back in the cables from your Starlink and the Router. Make sure the connectors are free of moisture and debris. If the alert continues to show after these steps, tap the alert and follow the instructions.
SLOW ETHERNET
Ethernet link agree on best speed compatible between devices. When this is below optimal speed you will be notified, signifying potential cable or connection issue.
What to do. Ensure cable is Cat5e or higher alongside Ethernet port is set to auto-negotiate at 1000 Mbps; lower categories may not support higher speeds. - Inspect all connections are ensure fully in place - Connect with a different device to see if issues persist - Restart devices by power cycling the router, unplugging connected device, waiting for 30 seconds before plugging back in
STARLINK DISCONNECTED
Your Starlink is unplugged or rebooting.
What to do. Check the dish is fully plugged in, or wait for the reboot to finish. - Additional check and make sure your app is looking for the intended Starlink device. Click “Select Starlink” or tap on the name of your Starlink in the upper left of your app screen to switch between multiple devices.
POWER DISCONNECT DETECTED
The Starlink system reports this alert when recovering from an unexpected power disconnect.
What to do. If the alert persists, check the power source to the power supply and ensure all cable connections to the power supply and Starlink are secure
STARLINK ROUTER HARDWARE ISSUE
There appears to be an issue with the Ethernet ports on your Starlink Router.
What to do. Contact Starlink support about replacement options.
POWER SUPPLY THERMAL THROTTLING
The power supply is exceeding its upper safety thermal threshold, causing your Starlink to throttle itself to reduce power draw and cool down.
What to do. Ensure the power supply is installed in a well-ventilated location, away from external heat sources. If the issue persists, consider relocating the power supply to a cooler area and power cycle the Starlink system.
STARLINK OVERHEATED
Your Starlink has shut down due to a high temperature.
What to do. Let it cool. It reconnects on its own.
THERMAL SHUTDOWN
The Starlink device has reached the maximum temperature threshold and has stopped service to cool down.
What to do. Ensure the Starlink device is installed in a well-ventilated location, away from external heat sources. Service will resume once the device cools to a nominal operating temperature.
THERMAL THROTTLING
The Starlink device is operating at a reduced performance level to prevent overheating, as it is approaching its maximum temperature threshold.
What to do. Ensure the device is in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or other heat sources. If possible, relocate the device to a cooler location to maintain optimal performance.
WiFi
POOR WIFI SIGNAL
Device has poor WiFi signal. Internet performance may be impacted.
What to do. Move closer to your router for a better connection.
WIFI CONFIGURATION REQUIRED
Your Router is requiring WiFi setup before accessing the internet.
What to do. Tap the alert to configure Starlink WiFi and restore internet access.
