Name your Wi-Fi networks and attach each one to a routing path.

Overview

This sub-step appears whenever the router you selected has wireless interfaces. Its header reads “Configure your wireless network settings”, and it offers two shapes: Single SSID, where one wireless network serves everything, or Multi SSID, where you publish a separate SSID per routing path.

Multi-SSID is what makes the project’s routing model visible to the people using the network. Join the Domestic SSID and your traffic goes out the local link; join the Foreign SSID and it goes out the foreign one; join the VPN SSID and it goes through the VPN client. In Multi SSID mode the header shows a running count of how many networks are active.

Before you start

  • The screen carries a warning worth taking seriously: “Please avoid using the following words in your SSID as they may indicate the type of network: ‘star’, ‘starlink’, ‘VPN’, ‘Iran’, etc.”
  • A network card is only enabled if its underlying base network exists. If one is greyed out with “This base network is disabled”, enable that network in the network configuration first.

Steps

  1. Choose Single or Multi SSID at the top of the screen.
  2. For each network card, enter the SSID and the Network Password. Generate SSID and Generate Pass fill the fields for you.
  3. In Multi SSID mode, Generate Common Password sets the same password across every network at once.
  4. Set SSID Visibility and Band Mode per network.
  5. If the router has more wireless interfaces than you have used, the extra cards let you pick which network each one is bridged to.

Troubleshooting

A network card is greyed out. Its base network is disabled. The card says “Network disabled: this base network is disabled. Enable it in the network configuration first.”
