LAN
Wi-Fi, port-to-network assignment, VPN servers, tunnels and the subnets behind them.
Overview
LAN is where you shape the inside of the network. The in-app help calls it “Configure your local network segments, wireless settings, VPN servers, and security policies for optimal performance and security.” In practice it is the step where you decide which of your devices sit on which routing path.
The project’s core idea shows up here as a set of named networks: Split for mixed traffic that gets routed by destination, Domestic for traffic that should always go out the local link, Foreign for traffic that should always go out the foreign link, and VPN for traffic that should go through the VPN client. Each Wi-Fi SSID and each LAN port gets attached to one of them.
Which sub-steps you see depends on your router and your earlier answers.
Before you start
- Decide which devices belong on which network before you start naming SSIDs.
- VPN Server and Network Tunnels only appear if you have a domestic link, because they need to be reachable over the local internet.
- LAN EInterfaces, Network Tunnels and Network Subnets are Advanced Mode only. In Easy Mode the wizard assigns ports and subnets for you.
Steps
- Wireless. Name your SSIDs and attach each to a network.
- LAN EInterfaces. Assign each Ethernet port to a network bridge.
- VPN Server. Let clients dial in to your router.
- Network Tunnels. Build GRE, EOIP, IPIP or VXLAN tunnels to remote sites.
- Network Subnets. Change the IP ranges behind all of the above.
