Interface Type

Wired or wireless link between the router and the access point.

Overview

The screen is titled Select Interface Type, described as “Choose the type of connection for your trunk network”. It appears only in Advanced Mode with Router + Access Point Mode selected, and it asks one thing: how the two routers talk to each other. Wired is marked Recommended.

The wizard checks every selected router for Wi-Fi before it offers the wireless option. If any of them lacks a wireless interface, the wireless card is greyed out with a No Wi-Fi badge and a warning listing the offending models under the heading “Wireless Router + Access Point Not Available”, and you are told to pick routers with Wi-Fi capability or use a wired trunk instead.

Before you start

  • A wired trunk needs a spare port on both devices and a cable between them.
  • A wireless trunk needs both devices to have Wi-Fi and to share a common band. The band is picked on the next sub-step.

Steps

  1. Pick Wired Router + Access Point if you can run a cable. This is the recommended option.
  2. Pick Wireless Router + Access Point only if both routers have Wi-Fi.
  3. Selecting a card completes the sub-step and moves you on to Router + Access Point Interface.

Troubleshooting

The wireless card is greyed out with a “No Wi-Fi” badge. One or more of the routers you selected has no wireless interface. The warning box underneath lists which. Either swap in a Wi-Fi-capable model on the Router Model and Slave Router sub-steps, or use a wired trunk.
