> When a node will not pair, and the compatibility and count limits that explain most failures.

## Overview

If the **PAIR NEW MESH NODE** notification does not appear in the app within
about two minutes of plugging in a node, work through the causes below. They
are ordered by how often they turn out to be the problem.

## The routers are not ready to pair

- Make sure the **primary router has finished setup** and is connected to
  Starlink.
- **Factory reset the mesh node.** A node that has been paired before will not
join a new network until it is reset. See
  [Maintenance](/en/guides/starlink/router-config/maintenance/).

## The node is too far away

Move it near the primary router to pair, then move it to its final position
afterwards. Nodes work best connected directly to the primary router, so put
the primary somewhere central.

## You joined the wrong network

This one catches almost everyone. A freshly plugged-in node broadcasts its own
`STARLINK` network. **Do not join it.** Stay on your original Starlink network
and open the app from there.

Renaming your main network to something distinctive makes it obvious which one
you are on.

## Pair it manually over ethernet

If it will not pair wirelessly:

1. Plug an ethernet cable into the port with the **dish icon** on the mesh
   node.
2. Plug the other end into any **LAN** port on the primary router.
3. Once the node is connected, unplug the cable and it carries on wirelessly.

No ethernet cable ships with a mesh node.

## Incompatible hardware

Starlink mesh nodes work with the **Router Mini, Starlink Mini, Router 3 and
Gen 2 router**.

They do **not** work with the Gen 1 router or with third-party mesh systems.

## Outdated app

Update the Starlink app. If it is current, uninstall and reinstall it.

## Too many nodes

**More than three nodes makes things worse, not better.** Start with three
paired to the main router. Beyond that the setup gets complicated and wireless
performance suffers.
