# The Starlink app

> Install it, get logged in when the login page fights you, and understand bypass mode.

## Overview

The app is not optional. It is how you check obstructions, align the dish, set
the WiFi name and password, read alerts and reach support. Support requests
sent from the app also carry diagnostic data, so they get resolved faster than
requests sent any other way.

## Troubleshooting login

Login opens a browser window, so most login failures are really browser
failures. Work down this list.

**Update the app first.** Install the current version from the App Store or
Google Play before anything else.

**Use a supported default browser.** On iOS set Safari as the default browser.
On Android install Chrome and set it as the default.

**Turn off your VPN** before you request a two-factor code or email.

**Enable JavaScript.**

- iOS: **Settings → Safari → Advanced → JavaScript**, on.
- Android: **Chrome → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings →
  JavaScript → Sites can use JavaScript**.

**Enable cookies**, including third-party cookies.

- iOS: **Settings → Safari → Advanced**, make sure **Block All Cookies** is
  off.
- Android: **Chrome → Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings →
  Cookies**, allow sites to save and read cookie data.

**Turn off automatic translation** in Chrome. It rewrites the login page and
breaks it.

**Clear browsing data and allow pop-ups.** Redirect blocking is a common
cause.

- iOS: **Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data**, and turn off pop-up blocking.
- Android: **Chrome → Settings → Privacy and security → Clear browsing data**,
  select cookies and cached images and files.

**Check the clock.** An operating system clock that is wrong will fail
authentication silently.

- iOS: **Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically**, on.
- Android: **Settings → System → Date & time → Set time automatically**. The
  path varies by device.

iOS versions older than 14 are known to have problems.

## Bypass mode

Bypass mode turns the Starlink router off so a third-party router can take
over. WiFi on the Starlink router is disabled completely while it is on.

Enable it in **Starlink app → Settings**. There is no toggle to turn it off
again: **the only way out of bypass mode is a factory reset.** Decide before
you enable it.

### Router 3

Enable bypass mode in the app, then plug your router into one of the ethernet
ports on the back. A violet light confirms bypass mode and turns off after an
hour.

### Router Mini

**Starlink app → Settings → Bypass Mode → Enable**. The violet LED appears and
turns off after an hour.

To exit, press the rear reset button with a paperclip until the LED flashes
rapidly, then wait for the reboot and a slow white blink.

### Starlink Mini

The Mini has its router built in, so bypass mode is how you put your own router
in front of it. Connect through the ethernet port using the Mini Starlink Cable
from the Starlink shop, or your own ethernet cable.

Two things worth knowing before you commit:

- With a standard RJ45 cable the Mini **is no longer rated IP67**. The official
  cable is what preserves the weatherproofing.
- Exiting bypass mode needs a manual factory reset on the unit.
